The Chemicals Hiding in Your Skincare — And What the Research Actually Says Skincare labels love reassuring words: “dermatologist-tested,” “clinically proven,” “safe for daily use.” But peer-reviewed research on common face-product ingredients tells a more complicated story. Here’s what the science shows about five categories of concern — and why formulating with botanicals, as Botika does, sidesteps the problem rather than managing it. 1. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen. Preservatives like diazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15, and DMDM hydantoin are designed to slowly release small amounts of it to fight bacteria. Research led by Dr. Ami Zota found over half of surveyed Black and Latina women regularly used products with these preservatives, with disproportionate exposure among people of color (Columbia Mailman). That research informed Washington’s 2025 first-in-the-nation ban (Toxic-Free Future), with California and Maryland following. Takeaway: state legislatures now write laws naming these exact chemicals — this isn’t a fringe concern. 2. Parabens Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, butylparaben) are cheap preservatives and the most studied endocrine-disruptor candidates in cosmetics. Lab research repeatedly shows they activate estrogen receptors and disrupt hormone synthesis: studies found paraben exposure promotes breast cancer cell proliferation and disturbs hormone synthesis in cells and zebrafish (2023 study), causes thyroid disruption and developmental toxicity in zebrafish (2021 study), and disrupts the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis (2023 review). In fairness, this is a live debate — older, industry-funded reviews argue estrogenic activity is far weaker than the body’s own hormones and human evidence remains inconclusive (2005 review; Toxicology Letters). A 2026 study called activity “weak” but said cumulative exposure “warrants further investigation” (2026 study). Takeaway: the hazard signal in cell/animal studies is real; whether typical exposure harms humans is unresolved — uncertainty worth avoiding rather than betting on. 3. Phthalates Phthalates help fragrance “stick” to skin and keep plastics flexible. Like parabens, they’re established endocrine disruptors, linked to reproductive and developmental harm (2021 review). A 2025 study found a significant link between phthalate exposure and rash/eczema, especially in women, via immune disruption and impaired skin-barrier function (2025 study) — undermining the barrier health most face products claim to support. 4. PFAS (“forever chemicals”) PFAS show up in some moisturizers, cleansers, and sunscreens for texture and water resistance, but they don’t break down. In December 2025, the FDA’s mandated safety review couldn’t confirm the safety of 19 of the 25 most common PFAS due to missing data (FDA, 2025). Independent science is more alarming: facial cleansers, moisturizers, and sun-care products account for over 90% of PFAS mass in cosmetics (2024 study) — face products, not makeup, are the main exposure route. Transdermal absorption may be the second-largest PFAS exposure route overall, exceeding European food-safety thresholds (2025 study). PFAS is linked broadly to diabetes, thyroid/immune disruption, liver disease, and certain cancers (OECD, 2024). Takeaway: no federal ban exists yet, but a dozen-plus states are banning PFAS outright — regulation racing a hazard the FDA admits it can’t fully characterize. 5. Benzene contamination in acne treatments This isn’t about an added ingredient — it’s about what a “safe” one turns into. Benzoyl peroxide can degrade into benzene, a known carcinogen, especially at elevated temperatures. A 2024 study tested 66 benzoyl-peroxide products and found benzene formed under normal storage/body-temperature conditions, with one in three exceeding the FDA’s 2 ppm limit (2024 study). A follow-up tested 111 products and found 34% exceeded the limit, up to 35.3 ppm — 17 times the allowed level (Medscape, 2024). FDA testing in 2025 led to voluntary recalls of six products (FDA, 2025). Takeaway: even approved ingredients can turn hazardous through routine handling — a risk plant-based actives don’t carry. Why botanical alternatives hold up “Natural” isn’t automatically safe — some essential oils are common irritants, and every ingredient deserves evidence, not assumption. But Botika’s botanical actives have reassuring clinical data: Bakuchiol vs. retinol: a randomized, double-blind trial found both reduced wrinkles and hyperpigmentation equally well, but retinol caused more scaling and stinging (2018 trial) — the basis for our Bakuchiol Serum. Plant oils (jojoba, evening primrose): a review found these “effective… to strengthen stratum corneum integrity” (review) — the same barrier-repair mechanism synthetics imitate, without contamination risk. The Botika difference We formulate around this evidence deliberately.
