Oily Skin
Lightweight, balancing botanical formulas for oily and shine-prone skin. Our carefully selected actives regulate sebum, minimize pores, and keep skin fresh and matte — without stripping the moisture your skin actually needs.
Why Oily Skin Isn't the Enemy
Oily skin gets a bad reputation, but sebum is essential. It lubricates the skin, protects the barrier, and keeps skin supple and youthful. The goal isn't to eliminate oil — it's to balance it. When skin is over-stripped of its natural oils through harsh cleansers or alcohol-based products, it responds by producing even more sebum to compensate. This rebound effect is one of the most common reasons oily skin gets worse over time despite aggressive treatment.
The botanical approach works differently: gentle cleansing, lightweight hydration, and balancing actives that regulate sebum production at the source rather than stripping it away.
What Causes Excess Oil Production?
Sebum production is regulated by sebaceous glands, which are influenced by hormones (particularly androgens), genetics, diet, humidity, and skincare habits. Oily skin tends to have larger, more active sebaceous glands — especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). Stress, heat, and comedogenic (pore-clogging) products can all amplify oil production and lead to congestion and breakouts.
The Myth of Skipping Moisturizer
One of the most damaging habits for oily skin is skipping moisturizer. When skin is dehydrated — even oily skin can be dehydrated — it overproduces sebum to compensate for the lack of water. Lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers that deliver hydration without occlusive heaviness are essential for keeping oily skin balanced and preventing the rebound oil surge that comes from going without.
Botika's Key Ingredients for Oily Skin
- Activated Charcoal — acts like a magnet for excess oil and impurities, drawing them out of pores without disrupting the skin's moisture balance
- French Green Clay — absorbs excess sebum and tightens the appearance of pores; one of the most effective natural mattifying ingredients available
- Tea Tree Hydrosol — delivers antimicrobial and sebum-regulating benefits at a skin-safe concentration; reduces the bacteria that thrive in oily, congested skin
- Rose Water — a gentle astringent that tones and tightens pores without alcohol or synthetic astringents
- Oat Oil — counterintuitively ideal for oily skin; its linoleic acid content helps regulate sebum production and is non-comedogenic
- Sandalwood Hydrosol — naturally balancing and anti-inflammatory; soothes oily, congested skin without adding heaviness

Recommended Routine for Oily Skin
The key for oily skin is consistency with gentle, balancing products — not aggressive stripping. Less is more.
- Cleanse — The Face Wash Rose & Oats gently removes excess oil and impurities without stripping. For a deeper cleanse 2–3 times per week, use the Facial Cleansing Bar with Charcoal to draw out congestion and absorb excess sebum.
- Tone — Follow with the Hydrating Mist Sandalwood + Rose to tone, tighten pores, and prep skin for moisture — without alcohol or synthetic astringents.
- Moisturize — Don't skip this step. The Chamomile & Aloe Soothing Moisturizer delivers lightweight hydration that keeps skin balanced without adding shine.
- Facial Oil (optional) — A few drops of the Botanical Face Oil Veil can actually help regulate oily skin — its linoleic-rich formula signals to sebaceous glands that the skin is nourished, reducing the rebound oil response.
