Olive Squalane

Olive Squalane

Olive squalane is a plant-derived emollient that mimics the skin’s own natural lipids. Lightweight, non-greasy, and non-comedogenic, it is one of the most universally compatible moisturizing ingredients in natural skincare.

What is olive squalane?

Squalane is the hydrogenated, shelf-stable form of squalene — a lipid found naturally in human sebum and in plant sources including olives, sugarcane, and amaranth. At Botika, we use 100% plant-derived olive squalane as a clean, sustainable alternative to animal-sourced squalene.

What does olive squalane do for skin?

It fills in the gaps between skin cells to smooth texture, lock in moisture, and protect against oxidative damage. Because its structure closely matches the skin’s own lipids, it absorbs completely without residue and supports a soft, supple skin feel with consistent use.

Who is olive squalane best for?

All skin types — including oily and acne-prone — due to its comedogenic rating of 0–1 and rapid absorption. Especially beneficial for dry, dehydrated, or mature skin, and an excellent carrier for other active botanical ingredients.

Sensitive skin note

One of the least irritating emollients available. Fragrance-free, colorless, and odorless in its pure form — a reliable choice for reactive or allergy-prone skin. Patch testing is always recommended when introducing any new product.

Common questions

Why does Botika use olive squalane?

At Botika, we use 100% plant-derived olive squalane because it provides lightweight hydration, supports a healthy skin barrier, and works well with a wide range of botanical ingredients. It offers the moisturizing benefits of naturally occurring skin lipids while remaining stable, sustainable, and suitable for virtually every skin type.

Is olive squalane the same as squalene?

No — squalene (with an ‘e’) is the naturally occurring lipid found in human sebum and plant oils, but it is unstable and oxidizes quickly on the skin. Squalane is the hydrogenated, stabilized form that is shelf-stable and safe for skincare formulas. It delivers the same skin-compatible benefits without the instability or risk of oxidation.

Does olive squalane clog pores?

No — it has a comedogenic rating of 0 to 1, making it one of the least pore-clogging emollients available. Its molecular structure is so similar to the skin’s own sebum that it absorbs completely rather than sitting on the surface, making it safe even for congestion-prone skin.

Is olive squalane good for anti-aging?

Yes — it supports anti-aging through two mechanisms. As an emollient, it plumps and smooths the skin surface, reducing the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration. As an antioxidant, it helps protect skin lipids from oxidative damage — one of the key drivers of collagen breakdown and premature aging.

What is the difference between olive squalane and shark squalane?

Historically, squalane was derived from shark liver oil. Olive squalane is a plant-based, cruelty-free alternative that delivers identical skin benefits without the ethical and sustainability concerns of shark-sourced ingredients. Botika uses exclusively plant-derived olive squalane in all formulas.

Can olive squalane be used with other active ingredients?

Yes — olive squalane is one of the most compatible carrier ingredients available. It does not interfere with actives like bakuchiol, vitamin C, niacinamide, or rosehip oil, and can actually enhance their absorption by improving skin permeability. It is stable across a wide pH range and does not react with most skincare ingredients.
